The Simple Life
In a peaceful little village surrounded by tall trees and whispering winds, lived a humble man named Ramu. He was a poor woodcutter, but rich in kindness and honesty.
Each morning, as the sun peeked over the horizon, Ramu would pick up his old iron axe and walk deep into the forest. He chopped firewood—not too much, never greedily—and carried it back to sell in the village. The money he earned was just enough to buy food for his family.
Ramu didn’t wish for gold or silver. His heart was content, for he believed in hard work, simplicity, and truth. His axe may have been worn out, but his soul was strong.
His life was quiet, honest, and full of meaning. But one day, everything changed…
Trouble by the River
One bright morning, Ramu walked deeper into the forest, his faithful axe in hand. Birds chirped above him, and the breeze danced through the trees. He found a spot near a sparkling river and began chopping wood.
But suddenly—slip!—his hands lost grip.
SPLASH!
His old iron axe flew from his hands and sank into the deep, flowing river.
Ramu froze. Panic welled up inside him.
“Oh no… my axe!” he cried, falling to his knees. “That was all I had. How will I work now? How will I feed my family?”
He looked into the river, but the water just kept flowing gently—quiet, uncaring.
A Magical Appearance
As Ramu sat by the river, staring sadly into the water, something incredible happened.
The gentle ripples began to shimmer.
From the heart of the river rose a radiant angel, her wings glowing in the morning light. Her long golden hair flowed like sunlight, and her calm smile warmed the air around her.
“I saw your axe fall,” the angel said gently.
“Don’t worry, kind man. I will help you.”
With grace and ease, she dipped her hand into the water and rose again—this time holding a golden axe, gleaming like treasure.
“Is this your axe?” she asked.
Ramu looked at the shining tool, amazed by its beauty. But he shook his head and said honestly,
“No, dear angel. That’s not mine. My axe was old, made of plain iron.”
Silver Temptation
The angel looked at Ramu with kind eyes, clearly moved by his honesty.
Without saying a word, she slipped beneath the water once more. After a moment, she rose again—this time holding a silver axe, polished and beautiful, gleaming in the sun.
She offered it to him and asked,
“Is this your axe, dear woodcutter?”
Ramu looked at it closely. It was tempting. Much finer than the one he had lost.
But once again, he stayed true to his heart.
“No, ma’am,” he said calmly. “That axe is not mine either. Mine was an old iron one. Nothing so fine as gold or silver.”
The angel smiled—brighter than before. Her eyes twinkled with admiration.
Honesty Rewarded
For the third time, the angel dipped into the clear, flowing river.
When she rose again, she held a rusty old iron axe—Ramu’s very own.
“Is this the axe that belongs to you?” she asked.
Ramu’s eyes lit up. “Yes! That’s mine! Thank you so much!” he said with joy, his voice filled with gratitude.
The angel looked at him with deep affection.
“You are a rare soul, Ramu,” she said warmly. “You spoke the truth—not once, but thrice—even when you could have taken more.”
“Because of your honesty, I shall reward you. You may keep all three axes—the golden, the silver, and your own.”
Ramu stood still, amazed. His heart swelled—not just because of the gifts, but because he knew he had done the right thing.
A Life of Gratitude
From that day forward, Ramu’s life changed.
He now had not just his old axe, but also the golden and silver ones—gifts from the angel for his honesty. He could have lived a life of luxury, but Ramu chose something greater.
He continued to chop wood, but now he helped others—offering wood to the poor, sharing his earnings, and spreading kindness wherever he went.
People in the village admired him—not for his wealth, but for his honesty and humility.
And though the angel never returned, her gift stayed with him forever—not just in axes, but in the deep peace of a life lived with integrity.
Ramu never forgot that morning by the river—the day when honesty turned into a miracle.
